How Should You Store Natural Skincare Products?

Natural skincare is simple to use, but it does like to be stored properly.

Because products made with oils, butters, waters and botanical ingredients are less heavily processed, they can respond to heat, light and changes in the room around them.

Why does storage matter?

Warmth can soften natural oils and butters. Sunlight can affect the appearance of natural ingredients. A steamy bathroom can also make products warmer than you realise.

This is why a product may feel softer, smell slightly different or show a subtle shift in tone if it has been sitting somewhere warm.

Where should I keep natural skincare?

  • A cool cupboard
  • A drawer away from direct sunlight
  • A bedside table that is not beside a radiator
  • A dressing table away from the window
  • A travel bag once the product is properly closed

Should I keep products in the bathroom?

You can, but bathrooms are often warmer and more humid than other rooms. If your bathroom gets very steamy or sits in direct sunlight, a bedroom drawer or cool cupboard may be better.

What about lip balms and richer products?

Balms, butters and richer moisturisers are especially sensitive to heat because they often contain natural oils and waxes.

If they get too warm, they can soften. Once they cool down again, the texture may feel a little different, even if the product is still usable.

What does Active Silver recommend?

Store your products in a cool, dark place whenever possible, and keep lids firmly closed between uses.

That small habit helps protect the product experience: the texture, the scent, the appearance and the way it feels when you apply it.
